Message from William Powers, Jr. President, The University of Texas at Austin The world is looking for new ideas and new leadership. At The University of Texas we have a bold new vision for the 21st century that embraces innovation and discovery. A vision that enriches the educational experience, takes on the most serious global challenges, and offers creative solutions. It is the vision of the Commission of 125, a group of dedicated alumni and friends who spent two years evaluating our university and giving us our charge: “The University of Texas will be the best in the world at creating a disciplined culture of excellence that generates intellectual excitement, transforms lives, and develops leaders. The University of Texas will define for the 21st century what it means to be a university of the first class.” For 125 years, The University of Texas has had a tremendous impact on our state and on generations of students who have come to our campus seeking knowledge, direction, and a sense of purpose. Our university has transformative power. We change people. They change the world. The Campaign for Texas will focus on the people who make us unique. Our faculty. Our students. Our researchers and scholars. Our poets and philosophers. It will focus on making our programs and facilities the very best. It will focus on what we already do well — and enable us to be exceptional. World class universities answer the challenging questions of our time: How to generate economic growth? How to manage and prevent life-threatening disease? How to respond to the global energy crisis? How to protect the environment and our natural resources? How to create the art and literature of the 21st century? When the world asks, The University of Texas answers. More importantly, we anticipate the issues even before they become challenges. The $3 billion Campaign for Texas will enable us to build on our strengths and take our academic programs and research endeavors to an even higher level. This is our time.
