The University of Texas Elementary School opened in 2003 as a public charter school for underserved families in East Austin and the first university-sponsored charter school in the state. Enrollment is free and open to all pre-K through 5th grade students in the area, who are admitted by lottery. Sixty-nine percent come from economically disadvantaged households. As a research based demonstration school, UTES applies research and expertise from the Colleges of Education and Communication, the Schools of Nursing and Social Work, the Department of Human Ecology, and other academic units directly to the classroom. The Texas Education Agency awarded UT Elementary School three “Exemplary” and two “Recognized” ratings in all years of TAKS testing. How We’re Helping Change the WorldGifts to the Campaign for Texas help create opportunities for the University to further educational research, enhancements, and more — all of which will help position the UT Elementary School as a leader of research-based demonstration schools.
