We will achieve our goal of becoming the No. 1 public research university in the nation through the strength of four fundamental components: faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, research and academic programs, and facilities. These are tied together in a systemic way so that change in one promotes change in the others. Faculty An outstanding faculty is the backbone of a great university. Distinguished faculty conduct world-changing research and attract top graduate students who help raise the caliber of undergraduate programs. The competition among top research universities for the best faculty is fierce. To recruit and retain the best, the University must be able to match or exceed offers made by other institutions. This means increasing the number of distinguished endowed professorships and chairs. It means providing equipment, laboratory space, and research support so that faculty can involve students in the discovery process. Students Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. The University must provide affordable, accessible educational opportunities to help students reach their full potential. Scholarship support opens the doors to deserving students and eases their debt upon graduating. Our students can focus on their education, not on how they will pay for it. For students deciding where to attend graduate school, an institution’s national reputation, the quality of its faculty, and the level of support are all key factors. We must increase scholarships and fellowships for talented undergraduate and graduate students so that Texas is their first choice. Research and Academic Programs The University of Texas is dedicated to solving the complex problems of the world and improving the quality of life through innovative research and programs across disciplines. The most important challenges of the day won’t be solved by one approach or idea; they require multiple perspectives and open dialog among researchers and scholars at the University and around the world. Endowments for research and funds for strategic programs will support continuing exploration and discovery, intellectual growth, and opportunities for progress. Facilities Modern buildings are essential for teaching, research, and recruitment. Properly outfitted facilities and updated infrastructure are crucial to the creation and dissemination of new knowledge. The most sought-after faculty and graduate students are going to accept offers from institutions that can offer superior laboratory and classroom space and the latest technology. Breakthrough ideas and innovation require specialized equipment. The University seeks partners to invest in new construction and infrastructure and renovation to modernize its beautiful but aging campus. These are essential for the University to lead in the 21st century. |
