ConocoPhillips SPIRIT Scholars
The University of Texas at Austin is proud to partner with the ConocoPhillips SPIRIT Scholars Program, which recruits outstanding students and provides them leadership and public service opportunities throughout their college careers. The program’s objective is to prepare students for success in the modern business world. SPIRIT Scholars receive scholarship awards, the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities such as academic and professional development, cultural events and community service, and industry mentoring. Other universities offering the program are the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University of Tulsa, the Colorado School of Mines, Texas A&M University, Kansas State University, and Texas Tech. The program represents ConocoPhillips’ core values: safety, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation, and teamwork.
About ConocoPhillips
From their beginnings in the early days of the oil industry, Conoco Inc. and Phillips Petroleum Company grew and prospered, becoming leaders in the global energy industry. On Aug. 30, 2002, they combined their strengths and values to create ConocoPhillips.
Program purpose
Provide educational opportunities to top students in business administration, engineering, computer science, and geosciences. The program allows both ConocoPhillips and The University of Texas at Austin to build and maintain mutually beneficial programs and provide targeted development opportunities to our future leaders.
Scholarship awards
Applicants for the SPIRIT Scholars Program will be considered for a scholarship award that may be renewed each year leading to a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree (geosciences and MBAs only) in a field of study recruited by ConocoPhillips. A limited number of scholarships are available. Scholarships are awarded annually; funds are distributed at the beginning of each semester. Initial-year scholarship awards are based on academic performance and leadership activities. Recurring scholarship awards are provided when the student maintains the program requirements and is an active participant in the program’s enrichment activities.
Minimum qualifications to apply
- Enrolled as a full-time student (minimum 12 hours/semester or 9 hours/semester for graduate students).
- Committed to majoring in any of the following disciplines: business administration, engineering, computer science, and geosciences.
- Cumulative college retention GPA – 3.25/4.0 minimum (un-weighted).
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and involvement in student and professional organizations.
- Strong interest in a career in the energy industry.
Scholarship and financial support
Initial Scholarship Award $5,000 or $2,500 per semester.
After completing one year in the program, there is a potential scholarship award increase of $1,000 following the completion of each successful internship (second, third, and fourth internship with ConocoPhillips).

The 2010-2011 application is now available. Download the Microsoft Excel file to your desktop, fill it out electronically, and submit it via e-mail. Please submit your completed application according to the instructions in the application.
The deadline for applying is Oct. 30, 2009, for the 2010-2011 academic year.
