UT Elementary School
These little Longhorns have big dreams. College, careers, a future with no limits. The University of Texas Elementary School is helping those dreams come true.
Rated exemplary by the Texas Education Agency, UT Elementary serves predominantly minority and low-income students in East Austin. The school’s innovative approach includes more instruction time than other public schools — an extra 30 minutes per day and one week per year. What’s more, UT Elementary continuously refines its curriculum to keep up with the latest research.
Success has caught up with UT Elementary. The K-5 charter school is currently at capacity with 260 students and is straining the limits of its temporary portable classrooms. But with help from Austin developer Perry Lorenz, the school is moving forward with plans to build a permanent facility at its current site. Lorenz, who owned the 2.4-acre site, sold the plot to the University for $1 million less than its market value. In addition to Lorenz's gift, the Buena Vista Foundation has pledged $1.1 million for the new campus and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has donated $250,000. The gifts will boost the school’s $19 million campaign to build a permanent 50,000-square-foot campus.
