More than one University of Texas team claimed victory at January’s Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, and the University’s general scholarship fund is now $200,000 richer because of it. Tostitos representatives presented a check at April’s annual Texas Football Spring Jamboree to President Bill Powers and Coach Mack Brown, who accepted the donation alongside the six Longhorn fans who won the prize for UT at the 2009 Tostitos “Race to the Bowl.”

University of Texas fans defeated Ohio State fans in a cross-country race to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The victory resulted in a $200,000 donation from Tostitos to UT's general scholarship fund.

Team Texas competed against an Ohio State team in a five-day, cross-country race to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Starting on New Year’s Eve in New York City, the teams journeyed to Glendale, Ariz., with stops in Ohio, Texas, and Las Vegas. The teams also competed in a variety of challenges in Las Vegas to test their school pride and spirit. Team Texas was pronounced the winner during the bowl’s halftime show. The winning team members were Tiffany Fogarty, Shawn Fogarty, Scott Hauptmann, Jeffrey Judkins, Megan Luther, and Dani Peebles, all from the Austin area.

“It feels great to be able to give back to a university that has given so much — not just to me, but to my friends and family,” said Tiffany Fogarty, who graduated from the McCombs School of Business in 2008. “I’m not just talking about the education I received, but also the sense of pride and accomplishment, and the memories. UT is more than a school; it’s a way of life. It’s about being part of something bigger than yourself. I’m excited to be able to help future Longhorns attend.”

Tostitos is a longtime supporter of college football and the Fiesta Bowl. Ann Mukherjee of Frito-Lay North America said the “Race to the Bowl” was created as a tribute to the loyalty and energy of college sports fans. Team Texas, she said, “fought tirelessly through several challenges” to beat out the Ohio State team.

“I’m honored to accept this award on behalf of The University of Texas at Austin,” Powers said. “Thank you to Tostitos for its continuous support of collegiate athletics and to our Longhorn fans for their unwavering school spirit. It was amazing to see such passion and school pride lead us to an outstanding victory that will undoubtedly help enrich the lives of many students.”
