Kelly S., McCombs School of Business, MBA Program

Giving News

Kelly S., McCombs School of Business, MBA ProgramI moved to Austin in 2008 to enter the McCombs School of Business MBA program, having spent the three previous years in Equatorial Guinea, West Africa, in the oil and gas industry. During this time, I developed a passion for economic development in Africa. Equatorial Guinea, though it faces considerable challenges as it develops, has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Living there I saw firsthand how business development can improve standards of living across society.

After only one year at McCombs, I already feel I have acquired the global business and entrepreneurship skills that will help me become a successful business leader in the United States, then eventually return to Africa and assist with economic development and poverty-related issues.

When it was time for me to choose a graduate school, several factors came into play. But the fact that McCombs offers such great scholarship support played a large part in my decision to choose UT over other universities across the country. The support of alumni and friends helps McCombs continue to attract MBA students from around the world — and keeps the program at the top of its game.

The McCombs School of Business is at an exciting stage in its development. For almost a year now, Dean Gilligan has been leading McCombs to a new level of distinction. Next year, a more flexible MBA curriculum will be implemented that will help students excel in the area where their passion lies and that stresses a global perspective and corporate responsibility.

The entrepreneurial spirit at McCombs is more alive than ever. Your support also strengthens programs that have been a great benefit to me, like:

  • Venture Fellows, which places MBA students as interns in local venture capital, private equity, and start-up firms.
  • Graduate Women in Business, which helps improve the visibility of women at McCombs.
  • Graduate Consulting Group, which exposes students to the world of business consulting.

Now is a great time to get on board and support the MBA Annual Giving Program — make your gift online today. Your support gives students like me the skills and confidence to leave UT and change the world.
