Eric A., Jackson School of GeosciencesGrowing up I was always interested in geology — I learned to love the outdoors as an Eagle Scout, and choosing a geosciences major really seemed to resonate with that passion.

The difference between applying to the Jackson School of Geosciences and applying to another Texas geology program was that, although I enjoyed exploring Texas, I knew that leaving the state (and even leaving the country) to study was going to make my geology experience really stand out. The incredible field work opportunities at the Jackson School are made possible by the support of alumni and friends like you.

I’m majoring in general geology now but would love to continue at UT with graduate work in marine geophysics. Being able to travel to Turks & Caicos to study carbonates in the Caribbean and taking a seismic research cruise off the coast of Oregon really cemented my interest in combining study of the earth with exploration of the oceans.

I know I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to travel and develop my interest in marine geophysics without the support of alumni and friends, which covered much of the traveling costs for students.

Now I’m looking forward to completing the capstone course for my degree — a six-week expedition across Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, and Utah — testing my skills and knowledge acquired during my time here at UT. Because of alumni and friends like you, 60 percent of the tuition costs are covered for this required course.

I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to experience so much field geology throughout my time at the Jackson School. Professors would like to get every student involved, but without adequate funding, not everyone gets a chance to participate. Help change a Jackson School student’s life today and make your gift online. Your support helps ensure that all students get the most out of their time at the Jackson School.
