A. J. C., School of Social Work

Giving News

A.J. C.I didn’t always know I would be a social worker, but after completing my undergraduate degree I volunteered at the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital and spent three years assisting with bereavement counseling. Through this experience, I realized that I had found a passion for social work.

When I began looking at graduate programs, I was immediately impressed with UT. My contact made sure I had everything I needed to make a well-informed decision — even making accommodations for my family to experience Austin and the University with me. In the end, choosing UT was an easy decision. I hope that supporting the School of Social Work Annual Giving Program is an easy decision for you, too.

I’m spending this May in Ghana for a three-and-a-half week service learning course where I will be assisting a perinatal education organization to identify ways to decrease infant and mother mortality rates. In the fall, I’ll intern with the National Committee on Community Service in Washington, D.C., where I’ll learn about the role social workers play in public policy and government.

The UT Austin School of Social Work has given me incredible opportunities for working and learning abroad — opportunities that are made possible because of the support of alumni and friends. Your contributions help support the school in many ways, from recruiting outstanding faculty to providing invaluable student scholarships. In my case, it helped alleviate some of the costly expenses of travel and tuition.

Coming to UT has been a life-changing experience. The most talented and well-known professors in the field are teaching me the skills and providing the knowledge I need to be a social worker. Students at other schools are reading books by the professors I see every day in the classroom. My classmates are diverse and intelligent students from across the country and around the globe who are all well-deserving of support as they embark on important field research and study.

Please continue to support the School of Social Work and make your gift online. Together we can continue to change the world.

Sincerely,

A.J. C.
