Scott L., College of Natural Sciences

Giving News

Scott L., College of Natural SciencesI just finished my third year as a biochemistry student in the College of Natural Sciences. I joke that I chose UT Austin to balance out the Aggie-to-Longhorn ratio in my family.

Actually though, my brother received his biochemistry degree from The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Natural Sciences in 2005, and his firsthand accounts made me want to follow in his footsteps. Now I can’t imagine what my life would be like had I taken a different path.

The faculty research conducted in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has opened my eyes to the endless opportunities I have to change the world. One of the department’s esteemed professors, Dr. Michael Krische, has been recognized for his work developing a new class of chemical transformations that eliminate waste production. Another, Dr. John McDevitt, is leading a research team working to create a nano-bio-chip that could someday lead to early diagnosis of a heart attack using only a few drops of saliva. And Dr. Kenneth Johnson is working to develop less toxic nucleoside analogs used in the treatment of viral infections such as hepatitis and AIDS.

Your gifts help the College of Natural Sciences fund this innovative research in chemistry and biochemistry. Your donations also support the following priorities:

  • Research units like the Marine Science Institute, where scientists research the coastal zone ecosystem, and McDonald Observatory, where scientists study dark energy and the evolution of galaxies.
  • Crucial funding to help shape today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders by supporting student internships, graduate student teaching assistant positions, undergraduate scholarships, and student organizations.
  • Outreach programs that inspire teachers, students, and the general public such as the Texas Natural Science Center’s Museum Express, the Marine Science Institute’s Wetlands Education Center, and the Department of Computer Sciences’ First Bytes Summer Program.

Your gift today helps students like me pursue our dreams, and strengthens our college so it can continue to be one of the best in the nation. Change a Natural Sciences student’s life today and make your gift online. Thank you for your support.
