Elizabeth “Lisa” M. Garcia

Elizabeth “Lisa” M. Garcia
February 27, 1965 – May 5, 2013

Lisa received a BBA from The University of Texas at Austin in 1987 and a JD from Texas Southern University in 1992. She served as a briefing attorney at the Texas Court of Appeals for the Second District and continued serving the people of Texas as an assistant attorney general for the state of Texas, an attorney with the Office of the State Comptroller of Public Accounts, and a prosecutor in the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office. After a stellar record in public service, Lisa practiced civil and personal injury litigation with the predecessors to Vidaurri, Lyde, Rodriguez and Haynes, LLP. While at UT, Lisa served as an upperclassman mentor to younger UT students from the Rio Grande Valley.  Lisa was a passionate alumna and served on the University’s Development Board in addition to serving on a regional scholarship selection committee for the RGV Scholars Program this past spring.

Upon her passing, Lisa’s friends and family decided to come together in an effort to raise $200,000 to name one of the RGV Scholarships in her memory. This four-year, full-tuition, renewable scholarship will be awarded to an incoming undergraduate Valley student who is bright and, like Lisa, has a burning desire to be a Longhorn.
