A thriving economy depends on a creative high-tech workforce and a steady stream of innovative ideas. The University and its Department of Computer Science play crucial roles in Texas’ high-tech economy. That economy has an annual payroll of $30.4 billion and is second only to California’s. The department’s strategic economic impact is estimated at $8.7 billion annually.

The department is among the top 10 in the United States and is the country’s largest such department. It has launched a campaign to climb to the very top with a multi-pronged strategy that includes bringing the department’s faculty together into a major new state-of-the-art computing complex to support research and education. The centerpiece of the plan is the Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex and the Dell Computer Science Hall, both made possible by generous lead gifts from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. The campaign also aims to increase the number of highly competitive professorships, graduate fellowships, and undergraduate scholarships and to support research leaves and innovative undergraduate programs.
