Longhorn Nation Steps Up for Students in a Record-Breaking Effort

When The University of Texas at Austin transitioned classes online and moved students off campus this spring, many young Longhorns’ lives were disrupted. Some found themselves in need of emergency support from UT — they needed computers and internet access to stay connected with classes, funds to overcome housing and food challenges, and help with unforeseen travel or moving expenses.

When our students were in the greatest need, Longhorn Nation was there. The crowdfunding project to support UT’s Student Emergency Fund is now the most successful ever.

“My father has cancer and the COVID-19 crisis delayed his treatments. He has been unemployed due to his health situation and my mother’s job was threatened by the global pandemic. As the oldest daughter and a first-generation college student, I felt overwhelmed and desperate. So many uncertainties of how to make ends meet were closing in around me, and that’s when I was referred to the Student Emergency Fund.

Because of this help, I was able to make my rent. Because of this generosity, I have hope that things will be okay. Although times are hard and so many are experiencing so much loss, there are kind people who care and who chose to assist in alleviating some of my burdens. I am more than grateful — I am renewed.”

“Thank you for supporting the Student Emergency Fund. I had been worried about how I would finish my coursework remotely, but with the laptop I received, I successfully completed the semester.”
