UT’s outstanding student body is drawn by the unique Forty Acres experience and dozens of top-tier programs. But the highest-potential students have many college options, and it’s scholarships and exceptional honors programs that give UT an edge in recruitment. Your generous support creates and grows those scholarships in every college and school on campus, bringing the best students in the world to Texas.

Last spring, the Turing Scholars Program in UT’s Department of Computer Science launched a HornRaiser crowdfunding project with the goal of adding $25,000 to their scholarship fund. Turing Scholars recognizes the top 5% of each entering cohort of computer science students — already an elite group enrolled in a program ranked in the top 10 nationally. “One of the goals of our program is to really challenge our best students,” says Professor Calvin Lin, the program’s director.

Quote James Stuedemann

“I knew I wanted to go to UT, but the out-of-state tuition made it a difficult decision. My scholarship made all the difference. As a Turing Scholar, I’ve had the opportunity to explore and develop my computer science interests sand skills, from designing ray tracers to self-driving cars.”

In just weeks, a few dozen alumni and friends contributed over $40,000. By coming together, they were able to make a big difference for even more outstanding young computer scientists.

Because of their support — and the ongoing support from alumni and friends like you — three outstanding first-year students received Turing Honors scholarships in the 2021-22 academic year, with new scholarships to be awarded for generations of students to come.

“Thank you for supporting our students,” says Professor Lin. “Thank you for supporting our program, and thank you for helping develop the technology leaders of tomorrow.”

“My Turing scholarship made UT a very attractive choice when I was choosing where to go to college, because I was able to get a really great CS education without a financial burden. In my freshman year as a Turing Scholar, I had access to so many opportunities in my classes and community, and I learned so much.”
