Machine learning, the technology that drives artificial intelligence systems, is helping humans do things never before possible. The University of Texas at Austin is becoming a global leader in harnessing the power of this rapidly evolving technology.

UT has declared 2024 “The Year of AI” and is leading the way with a first-of-its-kind online master’s degree in AI, new industry and government partnerships, and funded research breakthroughs on cross-disciplinary collaborations involving more than 150 UT researchers across 30 disciplines. These interdisciplinary initiatives and breakthrough research opportunities are possible because of the generous donors supporting these campus-wide initiatives.

Alumnus Sanjay Chandra and his family — namesakes of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering — dedicated part of their generous gift in 2022 to artificial intelligence and the intersection of health and engineering.

“UT Austin has a distinct advantage in fostering AI and robotics solutions due to its interdisciplinary approach by bringing together top minds and fostering collaboration between engineers, medical professionals and experts in various domains,” says Sanjay.

Alumni Amir and Zaib Husain helped establish the Machine Learning Laboratory in 2020 through a substantial gift supporting the acceleration of efforts by UT experts across campus to solve challenges in fields that affect us all, like energy and health care.

With a multidisciplinary focus on AI, UT is equipping students and learners alike to navigate a world being transformed by AI — regardless of their major or course of study. Your support has helped create research opportunities for collaborations across and beyond campus. Thanks to you, UT students and researchers will be at the forefront of AI innovation that will change the world.
